Using Character Tools
Popular After Effects plugins and scripts can enhance your workflow, but they may not always export correctly to Lottie format.
Duik Bassel
Duik is a rigging and animation toolkit. While Duik creates standard After Effects layers, some features may not export:
Compatible: Basic rigging with null controllers, parenting hierarchies, and standard transform animations generally export well.
Limitations: IK (Inverse Kinematics) rigs may not export correctly as they often use expressions. Convert IK animations to keyframes using "Convert Expression to Keyframes" before exporting.
Best Practice: After rigging and animating with Duik, bake all expressions to keyframes. Select layers with expressions, go to Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Convert Expression to Keyframes.
Limber
Limber creates bendy limbs using sophisticated path manipulation.
Limitations: Limber relies on expressions and advanced shape layer techniques that may not translate to Lottie. The flexibility and organic movement may be lost in export.
Workaround: Use Limber for animation, then manually recreate the movement using standard shape layers and trim paths, or consider using native After Effects shape layer techniques from the start.
RubberHose
RubberHose creates stylized, bendable limbs for character animation.
Compatibility: RubberHose generates shape layers, but the hose behavior is expression-driven and won't export to Lottie.
Best Practice: Animate with RubberHose, then convert the final animation to standard shape layers by pre-composing or duplicating and removing the RubberHose effect while keeping keyframes.
General Approach for Third-Party Tools
- Use the tool to create your animation
- Bake all expressions to keyframes
- Pre-compose complex setups
- Test export early and often
- Be prepared to manually recreate some effects using Lottie-compatible techniques
