Motion System in the LottieFiles After Effects

A Motion System is a design system for animation that helps teams define and reuse motion styles like colors, easings, fonts, collections, and presets, so animations stay consistent across projects.

Motion System allows you to:

  • Apply your system's colors, easings, fonts, and presets directly to layers in AE
  • Avoid redefining motion values project by project

How to use it

  1. Open After Effects and launch the LottieFiles plugin.
  2. Go to the System tab.
  3. From the dropdown, either:
    • Select an existing Motion System from your workspace to use it, or
    • Click Create new to start a new Motion System.
  4. Select a layer in your composition.
  5. With your Motion System selected and a layer selected, click Apply to apply the relevant value (color, easing, etc.) to that layer.

If no layer is selected, the plugin will show a "No layer is selected" message — select a layer in your composition first, then apply.

FAQs

Do I need a Motion System already set up before using this in AE?
No. You can click Create new directly from the System tab in the plugin to start one, or select an existing system from the dropdown if your team already has one.

Why isn't the Apply button doing anything?
Make sure you have a layer selected in your composition. If no layer is selected, the plugin will show a "No layer is selected" message and Apply won't have anything to act on.

Will changes I make in AE update the Motion System for my whole team?
Motion Systems are managed centrally in the LottieFiles Platform. Use the AE plugin to apply and work with your system; manage and publish updates from the Platform.

Can I use the same Motion System in AE and Figma?
Yes. Once a Motion System is published, it's available across the AE plugin, the Figma plugin, and Creator.

What can I apply from the System tab?
Anything included in your Motion System's Sections — colors, easings, fonts, presets, and assets — depending on what your team has set up.
